    12. April 2008 @ 11:15
    Ed Tribble Reports
    Posted: April 10, 2008 06:14 PM MST

In an emergency, every second counts.
But lately the Tucson Fire Department has noticed a problem that's slowing them down: it's people who aren't pulling over to right side of the road and stopping.

Flames destroy home in Bullhead City (Larry Tunforss) A firefighter is recovering after helping put out the flames at a Bullhead City home.

Bullhead City and Fort Movjave Mesa fire departments arrived and saw flames shooting from the house near Clearwater and Swan Drives.

Everybody escaped safely, but a firefighter injured his shoulder during the blaze. Winds also caused problems for crews as 24 MPH gusts fanned the flames.

The fire destroyed the home, a shed and 2005 Toyota truck.

An investigation is underway, but detectives believe the cause is accidental.

'Doomsday scenario' for Mesa Fire Department
    12. April 2008 @ 11:12
    by Gary Nelson - Apr. 10, 2008 03:25 PM
    The Arizona Republic
Last year, Fire Chief Harry Beck sketched a grim picture of his department's ability to save lives and property.

    This year, it's worse.

And the future, in the words of Councilman Mike Whalen, is a "doomsday scenario."

Firefighters risk lives at fiery scene
    4. April 2008 @ 10:36
    by Senta Scarborough - Apr. 4, 2008 07:00 AM
    The Arizona Republic
It was a tragic scene that could have gone from bad to worse, but firefighters willing to take a risk turned it around.

A four-member fire crew arrived on the scene of a car accident Sunday evening at Meridian Drive and Baseline Road and found a vehicle in a ravine with its engine on fire.

The crew found the driver trapped between the steering wheel and dashboard, unable to do much more than groan.

With just seconds to get the man out, Engineer Jeff Cosby pumped the engine while Firefighter Scott Figgins tried to keep back the heat and flames with a hose. That's when Capt. Mike DuBois, without putting on protective clothing or a breathing apparatus, approached the flaming vehicle, Mesa Fire Deputy Chief Mike Dunn said.

The message students heard during the Mock DUI Reenactment last week at Coolidge High School was that "it will affect you for the rest of your life."
    3. April 2008 @ 19:08
The morning program, funded by a grant through the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, included guest speakers in the auditorium plus a drinking and driving accident re-enactment on the football field.

The grant, totaling $5,500, also provided the funding for Coolidge Police Department officers to be present with Breathalyzers at Coolidge's prom last Friday.

Tempe ground zero in ambulance battle
    3. April 2008 @ 18:03
    by Dianna M. Náñez - Apr. 3, 2008 07:48 AM
    The Arizona Republic
A City Council vote in February to approve a new Tempe ambulance provider has not ended a lengthy dispute over emergency-service contracts in the city.

The Arizona Department of Health Services says it has concerns with the contract Tempe approved with Professional Medical Transport. The Department of Health Services sets ambulance rates in the state. It reviews contracts to ensure the terms will not affect rates.
